Get Box Elder Court Records
For a public District or Justice Court case, start with Utah Courts Xchange. The case history shows the court, the number, the parties, and the dates and events, plus links to any public documents. Remember that an online PDF is not a certified copy.
- Identify the holding court and case number through Xchange, a notice, or the Box Elder docket search.
- Buy an available public Xchange document when an ordinary electronic copy meets the need.
- Contact the First District Court clerk or relevant Justice Court clerk by phone or at the counter for the file's status and request route.
- Submit the official Request for a Record form by the delivery method the holding court accepts. Mail remains an option for a written request.
- Name the exact document, date, desired format, and whether certification is required.
- For older material, ask whether the court transferred its series to the Utah State Archives.
Plan on an answer within ten business days in most cases. Nonpublic requests run longer, since someone must review whether access is permitted.
Box Elder Record Request Form
The official request process sets out what belongs in a records request. Describe the record with reasonable specificity. The form separates inspection from copies, allows a documented fee-waiver request, and has fields for claiming a right to nonpublic material or asking for an expedited response.
Send the request to the judiciary office holding the record. The elected Box Elder County Clerk is not the right stop for these files.
| Request detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Case number and caption | Locates the correct Box Elder file |
| Document or proceeding | Limits staff search time |
| Approximate filing date | Separates similar entries |
| Inspect, copy, or certify | Defines the product and possible fee |
| Access or waiver basis | Supports a request that needs review |
Types of Box Elder Records
Know the difference between the products. A docket is the chronological index of a case. A document is the single filing or order behind one entry. Copies come in plain, certified, and exemplified form from the clerk. A transcript turns the spoken words of a proceeding into text, where one exists and access is allowed. Audio or video is a separate product with its own request and fee.
- Pleadings, motions, and responses filed in a public case
- Minute entries, public orders, judgments, and decrees
- Public letters of appointment and selected probate material
- Authorized transcripts or electronic recordings
- Certified and exemplified clerk copies
Discovery held by a prosecutor or a party is not automatically part of the court file. For criminal cases, Box Elder County publishes a separate discovery request route.
Choose a Box Elder Record Product
Match the copy type to what the recipient demands. An Xchange PDF never gains a clerk seal just because you paid for it, and certification never opens a record that is private.
| Product | Best use | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Xchange row | Locate and verify a case | Public portal |
| Case history | Read the public event sequence | Xchange |
| E-document | Read an available filing or order | Xchange purchase |
| Plain copy | Routine reference | Holding clerk |
| Certified copy | Formal recipient requires certification | Holding clerk |
| Exemplified copy | Recipient specifically requires higher authentication | Holding clerk |
| Transcript or recording | Review an authorized proceeding record | Court or reporter process |
Ask the receiving office which product it requires before paying.
What Box Elder Records Contain
What is inside depends on the court and the case type. A District civil file looks nothing like a County Justice traffic file, and access can stop at any redacted or classified portion.
| Identity | Court, location, case number, type, caption, filing date, and judge. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Names, party roles, and counsel where public. |
| Proceedings | Filings, hearings, minute entries, orders, disposition, judgment, and appeal events. |
| Documents | Public pleadings, orders, judgments, and other linked or clerk-held items. |
| Financial fields | Fine, fee, trust, paid, due, and balance entries when applicable. |
The public record can omit protected personal data or whole restricted case types.
Box Elder Copies and Fees
The Utah judiciary fee page lists current copy charges, and fees change, so check it before ordering.
The table separates certification charges from per-page costs.
| Item | Reviewed fee |
|---|---|
| Non-subscriber Xchange session | $10 |
| Xchange document | $1 per document |
| Paper copy | $0.25 per sheet |
| Certified copy | $4 per document plus $0.50 per page |
| Exemplified copy | $6 per document plus $0.50 per page |
| Electronic media | $15 per unit |
| Email or fax | $5 through ten pages, then $0.50 each |
Mail costs what it actually costs. Staff time is free for the first 15 minutes, then role-based rates kick in. Inspection on the form is free, though copies and staff work may not be.
Box Elder Filing Is Not Retrieval
Utah eFile and eFlex serve registered filers, not the public looking for records. Attorneys file through the District and Justice Court e-filing program. They use approved providers too. Once accepted material lands in CORIS, anyone can search it on Xchange. The official e-filing overview spells out those account limits.
That is why a filing login should never be confused with a Box Elder County record search.
Older Box Elder Court Records
CORIS coverage depends on when each court adopted the system. It also depends on whether older cases were converted. Most District Courts were on CORIS by the end of 1998. Justice Courts came aboard at different times. A thin or missing online history may mean paper, microfilm, or transferred material. So ask the creating clerk whether the file is still there. The Utah State Archives may hold older District, probate, municipal, Justice, or Supreme Court series. When you ask, give the court, record type, date span, and party. Add the case number if known.
Box Elder Public Access Rules
UCJA Rule 4-202.02 presumes public access to records classified as public. Access and requests fall under Rules 4-202.03 and 4-202.04. Under Rule 4-202.09, a requester who may inspect a record, identifies it, and pays the required fees can get a certified copy.
Classification controls. Sealed, expunged, juvenile, adoption, civil-commitment, and protected domestic or probate material does not become public through a broad request.
First District Court Clerk
43 North Main, Brigham City, Utah 84302
Phone: 435-734-4600
The District clerk holds District Court criminal, civil, domestic, probate, and judgment records. County Justice Court records stay with that court's clerk.
Claiming lawful access to nonpublic material means stating the basis. Any required authorization has to come with it. Keep any denial, because it documents the official access boundary and any possible next step.
Federal Box Elder Case Files
A federal matter tied to Box Elder County stays in its own system. The District of Utah files through CM/ECF. It retrieves public papers through PACER. A state Xchange number runs nine digits, while a federal one may read 2:26-cv-00825. The District of Utah CM/ECF page documents what it covers.
For those federal filings, PACER, not Utah Xchange, is the controlling docket source. Bankruptcy runs on its own District of Utah bankruptcy CM/ECF system. The official Utah Bankruptcy Court identifies its separate docket and public access route.
That source keeps bankruptcy retrieval apart from both state Xchange and the federal district docket. The official PACER fee page documents federal search and document charges.
The schedule states $0.10 per page, a $3 cap per document, and no search charge when a query returns no matches. These are federal fees, not Utah Judiciary fees.
Track a Box Elder Request
Log every Box Elder County request as you go. Note the office you contacted. Add the date sent, the case number, and a precise description of the item. Then record the response date, the fee, how it arrived, and the result. For an online docket item, save the official URL and the filters you used. Save the result time and the document title too. That habit keeps a docket entry distinct from the filing behind it.
Sometimes the clerk asks you to narrow things down. Revise the document name or the date range rather than resending a broad request. Hold on to any denial or partial response. It records the clerk's access decision. It may also point to the next route. For a live case, work the sequence in order. Start with the Xchange history, then the linked document. Next comes a clerk request for anything missing or certified. Finally, try Archives if the creating office transferred the series.
